The newborn stage is breathtakingly fleeting, and booking a newborn session is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give your growing family. But if you’re a first-time client (or even a second or third-time parent), you might be wondering: what actually happens at a newborn session, and how do I prepare?
I’m Erika Kelly, a newborn photographer based in Covington, Louisiana. My studio is designed to be a calm, comfortable space where you and your new baby can simply be — while I do the rest. Here’s everything you need to know before your session day arrives.

Newborn sessions are best captured in the first 5–14 days of life, when babies are still in that deeply sleepy, curly newborn phase. I recommend booking your session while you’re still pregnant (typically around 28–32 weeks) so your spot is reserved and we can connect before baby arrives.
Erika’s tip
Don’t worry if baby arrives earlier or later than expected! I always keep a flexible buffer around due dates and we’ll confirm your exact session date once baby is here.
-Keep baby awake a little longer than usual so they’re extra sleepy by session time. Give them a bath, talk to them, anything to try to keep them from falling into a deep sleep too early.
-Pack a bag for the studio with anything you might need diapers, wipes, pacifiers, burp cloth, a change of clothes for you and baby, snacks, water, and any special props or outfits you’d like to include in the session.
-Dress baby in a loose onesie nothing that leaves marks on their skin from elastic waistbands or tight sleeves.
-Feed baby right before you leave for the studio or come a little early and feed them when you arrive. A full belly is the secret to a sleepy, happy newborn. Try not to let them fall into a deep sleep in the car seat on the way over; we want that nap to happen on the posing beanbag!
-Wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable. Neutral, simple clothing tends to photograph beautifully and keeps the focus on baby. Avoid bright colors as well as bold patterns and prints. I have a small (but growing) closet with dresses for mom and a full heirloom client wardrobe for boys and girls that is available for sessions as well. I am happy to help with styling the whole family if you have questions about what to wear.
Erika’s tip
Babies tend to sleep best in a warm environment. My studio in Covington is always kept warm (around 80°F) to keep baby cozy and sleepy. You are welcome to bring a small fan if you are concerned about keeping cool during the session.
My approach is gentle and baby-led, meaning we follow your newborn’s cues entirely. If baby needs to eat, we feed them. If they need a diaper change, we pause. There is absolutely no rush. Sessions typically run 1.5-2 hours, and that time is built in intentionally.
I use a timeless, bright and airy style with soft wraps, simple and minimal props, and natural-light-inspired lighting. The result is clean, classic imagery that will feel just as beautiful in 30 years as it does today. When booking the Signature Newborn Session, siblings and parents are always welcome to be part of the session. I usually start with family and sibling posing to get that part finished so siblings don’t get too restless.
Erika’s tip
I keep the use of props (bowls, baskets, etc) to a minimum to ensure the focus is on your perfect baby. If there is a prop you want me to use, just make sure to let me know before the session so I can be sure to work it in.

My goal as your photographer is to help you with the entire portrait making process. Once your session is finished, I’ll begin carefully culling and editing your gallery. We will meet (via Zoom or in person) to review your images and I will help you design custom artwork and or an album to display and preserve these precious moments for years to come. Besides snuggling your precious baby, the design portion of the process is my favorite part!
Erika’s tip
Take a picture of any walls you envision hanging custom artwork on and send them to me before our ordering appointment. This allows me to make visual mock-ups of your images on your walls!
I’d love to welcome your family to the Erika Kelly Photography studio here in Covington, Louisiana. Whether you’re local to Covington or driving in from New Orleans, Baton Rouge or beyond, you’ll find a warm, welcoming space ready for you and your newest little one.
Ready to reserve your newborn session? Spots fill up quickly, especially in spring and fall, so don’t wait too long after your first trimester to reach out.
